Getting Started

We are a virtual airline mirroring the operations of Thomson Airways as closely as possible. All of our flying is conducted on the VATSIM (Virtual Air traffic Control Simulation) Network. This is a world wide network simulating real life commercial and recreational air traffic and procedures.

This guide details the software you must have before applying for a position at Thomson Virtual. If you need any further information on getting started or are looking for more detailed information on our procedures and operations then please contact our training department using the contact us page.

Minimum Requirements

1.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

A copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 of FSX. Both are available widely to purchase via online retailers and the high street. This is the only cost that you will incur by joining the airline.
  Flight Simulator Website
  Cost: Approximately £35.00 (GBP)

2.

Squawk Box

This software connects your PC to the VATSIM network. This is an add-on that allows you to see the other aircraft and also allows you to communicate with the online air traffic controllers via both voice and text.

  Cost: FREE

3.

FTS

FTS stands for Flight Tracking System. This is our fully featured in house software that our pilots use to monitor and report on their flights! This software allows you to automatically transfer data from your flight simulator to your online Thomson Virtual log book. A detailed report of your flight is generated as you fly. At the end of your flight this is simply sent to our servers automatically completing your logbook. Once you are a member FTS is available from our downloads page.
  Cost: FREE

Nice to Have's - To enhance your flying experience!

1.

Servinfo

An extremely useful utility that allows you to see every single pilot and controller in the world that is currently connected to the VATSIM network.  It really should be in the “must have” section above but as it is not a necessity it’s down here!  You can see all sorts of information ranging from which airport has the most traffic to which server will give you the best connection.  There is also an interactive world map to show you visually what’s going on.
  Download Servinfo from AVSIM
  Cost: FREE

2.

EURoute Module

This is a flight planning database which contains thousands of routes from around Europe.  As VATSIM is all about realism we ask you wherever possible to get your routes from either our own database or as second choice EUroute.  The reason being all routes that come from these two sources have been checked and validated using the eurocontrol system and are therefore valid routes.
  EURoute Website
  Cost: FREE

3.

Add On Scenery

Addon scenery is great to have as 99% of the default scenery is boring and unrealistic.  There are literally thousands of options to choose from when it comes to this subject.  Two sites you may want to have a look at to find a more accurate model of your favourite airport are www.flightsim.com and www.avsim.com.  Both have huge databases of addon scenery, aircraft and various other free utilities created by other FS enthusiasts.  The other option with scenery is to buy professionally created add on's.  These are great but you can end up spending a lot of money!  Our advise would be to check the two sites listed above for what you want before splashing out.
Cost: From FREE to upwards and endless !

4.

Addon Aircraft

You can fly with Thomson Virtual using the default Microsoft Flight Simulator aircraft. However, we recommend that you get one of the following add-on aircraft (available for purchase) to enhance your flying experience. These add on aircraft include great features including fully functioning flight management computers (FMC), weather radars and traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS). You can download liveries for these aircraft in our download center.

We recommend the following add on aircraft:
  Level D 767 (http://www.leveldsim.com)
  PSS 757 (http://www.phoenix-simulation.co.uk)
  PMDG 737-800 (http://www.precisionmanuals.com)
  Wilco Publishing 737 Classics (http://www.wilcopub.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=prod_737pic)
Cost: From approx £20 upwards (per add-on aircraft)

That’s about it. We hope that you now have an insight into what is required. The possibilities with this hobby really are endless as we are sure you will start to see so what are you waiting for? Click here and come and get started.
